What is Hospice Care?

Hospice care is offered to patients who have less than 6 months to live. Occasionally a patient’s health can improve while on hospice for many reasons. This is when the doctor may discontinue hospice care for the patient.

However, if the patient condition begins to deteriorate, the doctor can reassess the situation and suggest the patient resume hospice care.

Can I Choose to Stop Hospice?

Patients have the freedom to stop hospice without a doctor’s consent. This is called revoking hospice.

Some people choose to stop hospice because they want to continue curative treatment. Once hospice care is revoked, you can resume curative treatment or choose to have surgery.

However, it must be remembered that revoking hospice also means you are revoking the benefits you may receive from Medicare.
